Recovery journey
Holding on after the hardest days: my postpartum recovery
After postpartum anxiety made the early weeks terrifying, one mom shares how treatment, honesty, and support brought her back.
The first weeks
When my daughter was born, everyone expected me to glow. Instead, by day five I was crying on the kitchen floor while my husband held us both. The worry came like a wave I could not stop, thoughts about harm racing through my mind even though I loved her more than anything.
Reaching out
I told my OB the truth at my six-week visit, every ugly word of it. She did not flinch. She said, "This is an illness, not a failure," and we made a plan together: therapy, a low-dose medication that was safe for breastfeeding, and weekly check-ins.
What helped
- Saying the scary thoughts out loud to people I trusted took their power away
- My partner took a night feed so I could sleep a real stretch
- Medication gave me enough calm to use the coping skills therapy taught me
- A postpartum support group reminded me I was not broken or alone
Where I am now
My daughter is two. There are still hard days, but the darkness lifted. If you are in the early weeks and terrified, please hear me: this is not who you are, and it can get better. Tell someone today.
